Taekwondo is an ancient Korean art of self-defense,
which combines physical prowess with mental and emotional
discipline. The literal translation of the term from
Korean to English defines the art clearly: Tae
means foot (kicking), Kwon means hand (punching) and Do is
the Korean word for art.
The Taekwondo philosophy emphasizes the achievement of
balance between body, mind and spirit. As Martial
Artists, emphasis is placed on the skills and techniques
of self-defense, physical fitness and peace of
mind, as students strive to develop their personal
skills in order to grow in a well-rounded fashion and
enhance their ability to cope with life’s
challenges. With training, students benefit both
physically (increased strength, coordination and
flexibility and improved cardiovascular conditioning), as
well as mentally (gaining increased
self-confidence, concentration, patience, self-control and
a positive attitude). Overall, the objective of Tiger
Taekwondo is to help its members attain their personal
best by discovering their unlimited potential,
while gaining the confidence to explore this
potential.

Positive
Self-Image
Having a healthy and positive
self-image is a key to becoming a Black Belt.
The image you have of yourself is what you project to
others; valuing and believing in yourself ensures that
others will too. If you expect respect from others and act
in ways that deserve respect, you will get it.
Pride
Pride is having justifiable self-respect for yourself and
your abilities. It is the quality that makes you perform
at your best every time. Since you value yourself, you
will function at your full potential, always! Don’t
be associated with mediocrity; Martial Artists prefer
excellence and victory!
Courage
Courage is the ability to conquer your fear and doubt. It
does not mean doing something in the absence of fear, but
finding the confidence inside yourself to continue on the
path toward long-term goals. Fear is the most common of
all emotions; everyone experiences it. Courage is the
Tiger Taekwondo Champion’s
chosen response to fear because it will prevent you from
being intimidated by the prospect of failure.
As a beginning Taekwondo student, you will:
- gain
a solid understanding of the basic blocks, kicks and
punches (based on fundamental Taekwondo techniques)
that will form the foundation for further
learning.
Each technique learned is like a brick in building a
foundation of a house, with each move and lesson
supporting each other.
- acquire
an understanding of your body through training and an
awareness of the power that you possess. Only through
training will you know this power - you may not be
exposed to it otherwise. Taekwondo training is your
chance to understand your body in this way.
- experience
increased stamina and improvement in your physical
conditioning - encouraging you to maintain a healthier
lifestyle and a new way of living!
